In partnership with Canadian Hearing Services, Loyalist College is offering this introductory sign language course designed for the student with no previous knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) or with limited basic competencies. Students learn to handle basic everyday communication in ASL incorporating Deaf Culture and Deaf Community content. Topics center on Getting to Know you, Exchanging Personal Information, and Discussing Living Situations. Grammar is introduced in context with an emphasis on developing question and answer skills.
Note: A “no-voice” teaching method is used to reinforce the learning experience. You'll learn through virtual classroom instruction and role-play, as well as videotext and a workbook. The videotext and workbook supplement will reinforce the virtual classroom instruction so you can review, practice and retain what you learn.
